The Original Trinity Church was located on Summer Street.
As the newly formed Back Bay was becoming a popular section of town, the church fathers decided they wanted to move up town also!

The original Trinity Church was destroyed during the Great Boston Fire of 1872.
Trinity Church in Copley Square was consecrated in 1877.

The building is constructed of granite and red sandstone for strength, but being built on a swamp, an area of 90 square feet was filled with wooden piles to support the weight of the main tower, which weighs in at about 40,000 tons!

Covered in concrete the piles are still there supporting the tower and since it is swampland, the water level under the church has to be constantly monitored to make sure it doesn't sink...
