Holyoke
Massachusetts
Back in the 1800's Painters would venture up to the top of Mt. Tom in Holyoke to paint the view of the Ox Bow. The site is still spectacular!
On Mt. Tom the gates open at Sunrise and close at Sunset. Picnics and cookouts are welcome. There are many hiking trails and many places to stop to see the vista from different angles.
You can drive up to the top, but be warned the road does get quite....bumpy!
Holyoke itself is a city trying to rebuild itself. Their St. Patrick's Day Parade is known countrywide!
Like a lot of the cities West of Boston, they don't hold much charm for me, so I venture out to the outskirts.
I was lucky enough to find this old Railroad Track with the cars just waiting to travel on. I don't know how long they were there or even if these tracks are still used.
Holyoke was also the home of the Mt Tom Amusement Park, the City Fathers were wise enough to save the Merry-go-round and the Carousel is a very popular tourist attraction in the city's center.
Holyoke is about an hour and a half West of Boston.
