Often times when I am out photographing,
I seek out the unusual. This little study of Northampton
Massachusetts may prove my point!
Known for its lively and overabundant Artist Community, Northampton is known for being the home of Smith College.
A little further back in history and The State Mental Hospital was just as well known as Smith!
The Hospital is still remembered by the Community for their Lobotomies and burying the Patients in the front yard, I wouldn't say fondly tho!
I was lucky enough to get a tour of the "Old Main" by one of the Security Guards, starting at the Horse Stables, through a series of Underground Tunnels which led us to the Morgue, directly below the Main Cafeteria.
There were still vials of medicines. Plates on the tables. Curtains hanging in the windows, blowing in the breeze let in by the broken glass....
Last time I was there, construction had begun on the old buildings, the Insane Asylum is being revamped into Condos.
The center of town has some nice little eateries and many shops to wile away the hours.
Many of the restaurants have outdoor seating and the downtown area is always bustling with activity!
A great place to visit, Northampton is about an hour and a half West of Boston.
